O'Neil entered O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when the singer was still in high school. The judges were impressed with her singing and she advanced to the Top 100 round. O'Neil was given high marks by the judges. She suffered massive losses during the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was on the third row, followed by the second place. They were stunned by the decision and informed the crowd that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil was always delivering top performance since then, never fell below the top three. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil beat Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and the youngest winner in Idol history. O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
